Region 6 Public Health Leadership Institute for Emerging Leaders

Fall 2024 Region 6 Public Health Leadership Institute Update:

We will start accepting applications for the Fall 2024 R6-PHLI cohort in late Spring 2024. Check back for updates!

Region 6 Public Health Leadership Institute Overview

The Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center launched the R6 Public Health Leadership Institute in Fall 2023. The purpose of the R6 Public Health Leadership Institute is to develop the next generation of leaders in public health by providing an opportunity for strategic professional growth for those interested in refining their leadership skills and advancing their career to the next level.

The R6 Public Health Leadership Institute is designed to create a learning community that explores timely leadership topics and builds skills. The sessions involve interactive discussions with leaders in the field and are reinforced through skilled-based activities. The curriculum was developed using focus groups and key informant interviews with professionals across the five states of Region 6 to identify current issues and the leadership skills needed.

The R6 Public Health Leadership Institute will be held from September 2023 to early May 2024 with a holiday break. Prior to the start of the programs in September 2023, each applicant will complete a self-assessment for emotional intelligence (EI) and have a one-on-one session with a professional EI counselor. The applicant will also create an individual plan defining the goals and skills upon which to focus during the Leadership Institute.

The curriculum for the R6 Public Health Leadership Institute focuses on current issues and practical applications to develop independent leaders who will become decision makers. A cohort of participants will attend virtual Zoom meetings to enhance peer-to-peer learning and networking as well as carry out exercises and activities to enhance and reinforce learning.

There is no fee to attend the program, however, participants will commit to attend the synchronous learning sessions and complete the sessions preparation and follow up intersession assignments.

Prior to start of Leadership Institute:

In early August 2023, each applicant will complete a self-assessment for emotional intelligence (EI) and a one-on-one session with a professional EI counselor. The applicant will meet with an LI advisor to develop an individual development plan for goal-setting and identifying skills for development.

Application Process

We will start accepting applications for the Fall 2024 R6-PHLI cohort in late Spring 2024.

Format and Time Commitment

The first virtual meeting will be held in early September 2023. Virtual meetings will held biweekly through early May 2024. A holiday break will be observed mid-December 2023 until early January 2024.

Synchronous sessions will be held every other week for approximately 3 hours. The sessions will be led by an expert in the field and will be highly interactive with discussions, debate and activities.  The sessions will encourage participants to share experiences and the opportunity to learn from others. During these sessions, the group may meet as a whole or it may break into small groups for part of the time.  One of the goals of the Leadership Institute is for participants across the region to network and get to know their counterparts. There will be a short evaluation survey at the end of each session.

Off week: Before each session, participants will prepare for the upcoming session. After each session, participants will complete a written activity or assignment for the e-portfolio from the prior session. The combined work in the off-week will be a total of 3 hours per week.  In between the live sessions, the participants will be expected to prepare for upcoming sessions through readings or video modules that will provide the basic information for informed discussions and debates.  After each session, the participant will complete a written or video exercise/activity to be posted in the e-portfolio. The combined time for both types of activities in the off week will not exceed three hours. This schedule allows the participant to budget 3 hours of time each week for the Leadership institute.

Technical Information

Each participant must have access to a computer with microphone and camera and a stable Internet connection.

Tulane Learning Management System and e-Portfolio:

The Tulane Learning Management System will be used as a portal to manage the R6 Public Health Leadership Institute. The Tulane LMS will serve as a hub for Leadership Institute-related information, readings, video modules, assignments/activities, etc. Each participant will be able to build their own e-portfolio where they will submit assignments and house a record of accomplishments and skills for use during their future career paths.
