Public Health Information Systems
Course Description:
This course will introduce participants to the concept of medical/health informatics and provide some general examples of information technology as applied in health care. The focus is at the system level, not individual applications. The course also defines the national [health] information infrastructure and initiates discussion about the recommendations from the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. The issues underlying information and technology standards and key standards setting organizations supporting the national health information infrastructure are also identified. Journal articles and links to important source documents addressing the discussions of various issues are provided as a supplement to lectures and discussion.

Instructor:
Donna J. Slovensky, PhD, RHIA, FAHIMA
Donna J. Slovenksy is a professor in the Department of Health Services Administration and Director of the BS in Health Sciences program, School of Health Related Professions, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Slovensky’s teaching assignments include strategic management, quality management, information management, competency assessment and clinical outcomes evaluation. She also teaches doctoral seminars in strategic management and instructional methodologies for allied health education programs.
Dr. Slovensky has consulting experience in a variety of health care organizations including inpatient and ambulatory facilities, home health programs, public health and physician practices in addition to consulting with HIM education programs. Her research interests include the strategic use of information resources, consumer and purchaser use of health provider outcomes information, outcomes assessment using clinical and administrative data and innovation teaching methodologies in health professions education.
