Bioterrorism Preparedness: Principles of Emerging Infectious Diseases

Course Description:

Infectious diseases have regained public health significance with the emergence of HIV/AIDS and other new infections in humans. Some infections, such as tuberculosis and malaria, once close to elimination, have re-emerged and pose major public health challenges. This course is an introduction to the principles of infectious diseases and has been designed to introduce the fundamentals of infectious diseases to public health professionals.

Academic Faculty/Staff, Federal Government Employees, State Government Employees, Local Government Employees, Non-Government Employees and Students

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the transmission dynamics and other features of key emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of concern to public health professionals
  • Explain the factors that contribute to the emergence and re-emergence of key infectious diseases
  • Explain the key steps and decision points in managing an outbreak, and describe intervention and prevention strategies, including those relating to the protection of public health workers
  • Describe measures for protecting individuals from emerging infectious diseases
  • Describe the role of state health departments vis-à-vis emerging infectious diseases, and explain how it relates to that of other key entities involved in dealing with emerging infectious diseases
