Course Description:

Transgender Health 102: Transgender Patient-Provider Relationship is second in a five-course learning series.

This course reviews behavioral health issues pertaining to transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex individuals. It is designed for health care, behavioral health, and public health practitioners administrators, and leaders who wish to enhance their capacity to serve the transgender community in their practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify components to provide culturally friendly and culturally competent transgender healthcare
  • Define key terms including: gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, transgender, gender non-binary, intersex, and cisgender
  • Describe the elements to create a transgender-inclusive physical environment in a clinic or hospital
  • Recognize how overall healthcare experience of transgender patients is derived from healthcare provider-patient interactions, staff-patient interactions, and the physical environment of a healthcare organization

Denise Martinez received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Texas - Pan American in 2015. She is currently a degree candidate for a Master of Public Health degree from Texas A&M University at College Station. Denise’s capstone was focused on THI’s e-Learning and Transgender projects.
