Course Description:This course discusses risk communication in emergency preparedness situations such as disasters and crises. It describes how to use communications to offset threats that people experience in these situations. Common patterns such as information processing, values and emotions, as well as systems and environments are discussed. Also discussed are strategies for dealing with the media, constructing a message using the 27/9/3 rule of communication, perceptual congruence, visuals, language, anchors and framing.

Course Description:Japan’s Dai-ichi nuclear power plant crisis in 2011 impacted countries thousands of miles away.  The crisis shed light on several issues including protective action measures and population monitoring. Globalization and the large number of nuclear reactors around the world underscore the need to educate all members of society, particularly healthcare providers, about nuclear power plant emergencies.  Program faculty will discuss methods to solidify preparedness for such rare, yet devastating events.

Course Description:It’s been one year since the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon and the consequent Gulf Oil Spill. The oil spill itself was an acute event but the long term follow up will be with public health professionals for many years to come. This course will discuss the post-oil spill issues related to public health. Course Description:The primary aim of this course is to provide public health professionals with a broad overview of cultural diversity issues according to race/ethnicity and gender and to assess health policy with respect to these issues. The three specific racial/ethnic groups are: African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, and Asian/Pacific Islanders. The gender classifications include men and women. The cultural diversity issues will focus on health disparities as the major conceptual frame for thinking about health policy analysis.
