E008: Zoonoses, Vectors, Pests and Weeds

Course Description:

As human populations increase, two things are occurring. Urban centers attain greater population density and suburban areas expand into the rural countryside. Both high density human populations and greater proximity to wild and domestic animals and plants increases the potential that the health of the people in the area will be impacted by zoonotic disease, vector disease or noxious plants. This training goes over some of the most common definitions associated with zoonotic and vector borne disease. It discusses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and briefly how these principles are applied to each disease.  The more common and most serious zoonotic and vector borne diseases will be presented in outline format giving the disease organism, vectors, hosts, transmission mode, incubation period and associated symptoms. Not all of these diseases are seen in Alabama, but a knowledge of them is necessary to be proficient with zoonotic disease. Also provided is lifecycle information and control measures for common vectors and hosts discussed earlier. To conclude, a brief primer on toxic plants is given with color photos, toxic agents and symptoms of those toxic agents.
