Course Description:

The goal of this course is to provide a learning opportunity for Texas Department of State Health Services Institutional Review Board investigators and participants. This course is designed to provide investigators and participants with core information about the Texas DSHS IRB. It will describe the responsibility, purpose, and composition of the Texas DSHSIRB, examine the three functions of the Texas DSHS IRB, distinguish between Human Subjects Research and Public Health Practice, review each step in the Texas DSHS IRB process, and provide an overview of DSHS IRB policies.

Roxanne Johnson
Roxanne Johnson, MSPH, CHRC 

Roxanne Johnson has been a Director at Tulane University since 2006 with responsibility for oversight of the Human Research Protection Program.  She has worked at Tulane University since 1985 in various positions and has more than 30+ years’ experience in administration.

Ms. Johnson received her Master of Science in Public Health degree from Tulane University in 2009.  She is also certified in Healthcare Research Compliance.  In 2008, she published an article “Oversight of Clinical Trials: The Role of OHRP, FDA, and the IRB”, in Research Compliance Professional’s Handbook. 
 

Roberta McDuffie
Roberta McDuffie, ACNS-BC, MSN, BSBA, CDE

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Health, Roberta McDuffie has many years of extensive experience in research, which includes the development and execution of recruitment plans as well as the successful management of research studies. Her expertise includes preparation of grant applications and research protocols.

As Director of Clinical Research for the Clinical Translational Unit at Tulane University School of Medicine, she currently has the responsibility to monitor and manage over 115 active research studies. She was the Past Chair of the Biomedical Institutional Review Board, after having served in the capacity for more than five years.  She has extensive research regulatory expertise, is board-certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse with Prescriptive Authority (ACNS-BC), and board-certified as a Diabetes Educator (CDE). 

Jessica Ortman
Jessica Lewis Ortman, BS

Jessica Lewis Ortman is the current IRB Administrator for the Texas Department of State Health Services Institutional Review Board.  Previously, she served as a Research Program Coordinator for the Nephrology Department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and a Senior Undergraduate Research Assistant for the Center for Psychotherapy Research at the University of Pennsylvania.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and holds 7+ years of research and research administration expertise.
