Revive.Survive.Overdose Prevention for Pharmacists

Course Description:

The goal of this course is to provide general training and build capacity for pharmacy staff regarding the opioid epidemic, signs of overdoses, naloxone, and harm reduction. 

The Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention program works within the Prevention Department at Odyssey House LA. Their goal is to address and alleviate the impact the opioid epidemic has on the New Orleans community.  Valuable examples will be provided on what steps Louisiana has taken to address the epidemic.

The Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention curriculum is designed to provide general guidance and training to prescribers, pharmacists, clients, and community members on the overview of the opioid epidemic, naloxone administration and access, and tools to address the needs of individuals suffering with addiction.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what is Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) the severity of the Opioid Epidemic by:
     
    • Defining OUD and Identifying the most common signs of OUD
    • Comparing the number of drug overdose deaths to other leading causes of injury death in the U.S. and in New Orleans
    • Reviewing the results from a needs assessment on opioid epidemic familiarity distributed to community members, healthcare providers, and pharmacy staff in New Orleans
       
  • Recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer Naloxone by:
     
    • Reviewing how opioids effect the brain and the signs of an overdose
    • Recognizing the indicators that put individuals at high risk for overdose
    • Reviewing how Naloxone acts as an opioid overdose antagonist
    • Correctly ordering the steps in administering naloxone and providing rescue breathing
       
  • Describe the laws and regulations that protect you as a pharmacist when prescribing Naloxone and as a bystander when administering Naloxone by:
     
    • Examining the most common laws and regulations with respect to naloxone access and administration across the U.S and specifically in Louisiana
       
  • Understand your biases on addiction and how stigmatizing language may affect individuals from receiving proper care by:
     
    • Providing reasons as to why addiction is thought of as either a disease or a choice
    • Reviewing how language can impact the quality of care received by those with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and avoiding stigmatizing words and phrases
       
  • Recognize examples of harm reduction methods based on harm reduction principles and how it relates to the stages of change by:
     
    • Reviewing harm reduction principles and explaining what they mean to you
    • Identifying examples of harm reduction methods
    • Describing how harm reduction can be implemented at your agency/organization
    • Recognizing the stages of change and how those stages will allow better identification of appropriate services for individuals
    • Identify the variety of treatment services that can support an individual in their recovery

Helena Likaj

Helena Likaj, MPH

Helena Likaj is Odyssey House Louisiana’s Prevention Department Manager and the Project Director of Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention. In this role, she directs programs aimed at addressing and alleviating health issues impacting the New Orleans community. Originally from Albania, Helena has dedicated her life to addressing health issues impacting marginalized communities throughout the United States.

Helena received her Master of Public Health at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Her personal and professional experience has focused on youth empowerment, sexual health, health programming, and health equity with various agencies including Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, APEX Youth Center, and Odyssey House Louisiana.

Annette Johnson

Annette Johnson, MPH

Annette Johnson is the Project Coordinator of Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention and works to inform, empower, and educate healthcare prescribers, pharmacists, & community service providers on various evidence-based approaches and practices to address the opioid epidemic in New Orleans.

She received her B.A in Sociology with concentrations in Psychology and Health Education at Grambling State University and her Master’s in Public Health at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Annette’s professional and personal experience has focused on harm reduction, HIV/AIDS awareness, and mental health.

Prach Vij
Prachi Vij, MOMA

Prachi Vij is the Outreach Coordinator for the Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention program. With a Master’s of Science in Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture, Prachi brings several years of experience working in the healthcare field of substance use, addiction and recovery. Through her professional and personal experiences, Prachi has a passionate commitment to inform, empower and inspire forward progression in raising awareness about opioid overdose prevention.

Aligned with Odyssey House Louisiana’s mission to conquer addiction and through the impassioned and spirited efforts of the Revive. Survive. OverDose Prevention program, Prachi believes that, together, we can promote awareness and cultivate progress in the alleviation of the opioid epidemic in the Greater New Orleans region.
