Course Description:This course provides a survey of the theory and practice of human health risk assessment. The basic components of risk assessment are explained and real-life applications of each component and of risk assessment as a whole are discussed. In addition, special topics and issues related to risk assessment are covered, including basic toxicology, ecological risk assessment, uncertainty analysis, and risk communication. This course is intended for anyone who manages and interprets human health risk assessments.

Course Description:This course takes a closer look at the fundamentals of environmental health through the lens of a disaster situation. Environmental health issues that arise during disasters are explored, and suggestions for environmental health responses unique to disasters are given. Several historical disaster examples are used, with a focus on Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean tsunami and the World Trade Center collapse as the major case studies.

Course Description:This course presents the basic principles of qualitative health risk assessment of environmental chemicals, including an overview of the qualitative skills necessary to evaluate the probability of injury, disease or death in the general population from exposure to environmental contamination. It will also emphasize the qualitative aspects of hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response evaluation and risk characterization.  Lastly, the course will address issues in risk management and communication.

Course Description:In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, it is anticipated that the first several days will be dedicated to emergency response and rescue operations. Responding to disasters must be a well coordinated effort between the private and public sectors. Local, state and federal environmental health teams must include experts in all aspects of environmental health if and when available. This course will discuss environmental sampling and monitoring procedures for water, air, soil and sediment.
