E006: Solid and Hazardous Waste

Course Description:

This course contains five modules which address history of solid waste management, terminology, and current trends in waste generation; waste management hierarchy, waste reduction/reuse/recycling; composting, waste to energy, and landfills; landfill regulations; and solid waste collection.

Academic Faculty/Staff, Federal Government Employees, State Government Employees, Local Government Employees, Non-Government Employees and Students

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the history of Municipal Solid Waste Generation
  • You know ways to minimize MSW contributions (3 R’s)
  • Evaluate MSW disposal options: composting, waste-to-energy, and/or landfill
  • Appreciate the complexity of landfill location, design, and operation
  • Recognize that a MSW landfill is not intended to be a permanent solution
